Merry Christmas!

It’s the end of a very busy term!

Firstly, well done to all of our new Year 7 learners, who have made such a fantastic start to their time here at Pencoed Comprehensive. Your enthusiasm and hard work has been comended by so many staff, you should be very proud of yourselves!

Well done to those Year 11 learners who sat exams in November; we hope you get the results you deserve. Good luck to those sitting exams in January, too!

Year 9 have begun the process of selecting their options for study at GCSE, and will be making their final choices after Christmas.

All years have been involved in a whole range of sporting successes, as you can see below in the PE Newsletter!

The last couple of weeks have been a flurry of festive activity, starting with Christmas Dinner on 11th December. Many thanks to our wonderful canteen staff for their hard work!

Then, of course, was our annual Christmas Fayre. Stalls are run by 6th Form learners, as part of their Welsh Bacc qualification, with each team raising funds for a different charity. Learners from Years 7-11 have the chance to visit throughout the day, and enjoy the treats and activities on offer. Thanks to their support, over £1500 was raised for a variety of charities!

The annual Carol Service was as memorable as ever, with some show-stopping performances, and inspiring speeches delivered by our learners. Some of the learners also kindly agreed to perform at the end of year assemblies. We can’t wait to see what you do next year!

Finally, it wouldn’t be a true Pencoed Christmas without our ‘competitive’ version of the 12 Days of Christmas! Nadolig Llawen!

We look foward to welcoming learners back to school in the New Year, on Monday 6th January 2025.

Cyberfirst Girls

Last month, a group of learners competed in the Cyberfirst Girls Challenge, against teams from schools across Wales. Read about Charlie’s experience in the competition below!

The Cyberfirst Girls challenge is such an excellent opportunity to learn loads of new skills, with the incentive of a three course meal in Cardiff waiting at the end. This year we came third place in Wales. This is because our school worked really hard as a team.

I found the competition really exciting, especially as it was in one of my favourite subjects: coding. I learnt to use Cyberchef, which is a really cool website which can translate most code, and even identify different codes. I loved the competition, and it is such a good team building opportunity. I learnt so much, such as how to identify Base64 (a type of code) and I learnt all about Linux terminals.

There was one question that confused me a lot. It was titled ‘99  green bottles’ It was really cryptic, with a link taking you to a website with a button. When the button was clicked, a piece of text came out; ‘99 green bottles’ when you clicked it again and it said ‘and if one should fall’ another press said ‘then there will be 98 bottles standing on the wall’ this continued until it got to 1 bottle, when it then looped back to 99.

The team will attend an awards evening at the Celtic Manor early next year, and are in the running for a number of fantastic prizes for themselves and the school.

Da iawn, merched!
